Love’s Story

Large white dog with brindle spot, Love, smiling on green hills

At just eight weeks old, Love was thrown from a moving car into a homeless encampment and left to die. She was small, fragile, and badly injured. A person living in the encampment found her and took her to a local shelter, knowing she would not survive without help.

Love had four broken legs, a femur snapped entirely in half, broken ribs, and broken vertebrae. She endured three surgeries, wore six casts, and spent months unable to walk—pushed everywhere in a stroller while her body fought to heal.

Yet, Love never lost her spirit. With a heart-shaped nose and an endless capacity to love, she lived up to her name in every way. At first, she was wary of people, unsure whether the world was safe.

Over time, through patience, consistency, and care, Love learned how to trust again. Her journey mirrors that of so many people who have been hurt, punished, or abandoned. She relates to those who have spent time incarcerated. Those who must relearn how to feel safe, seen, and worthy of care.

As much healing as Love needed, she healed people too. She showed people what resilience looks like when everything has been taken from you and how love can still exist, even after deep trauma.

Love’s journey reflects the lives of so many who have faced trauma, been hurt, discarded, or defined by their worst moments, including those impacted by the justice system. Her story is proof that where someone starts does not define where they can go.

Love’s Healspace was created in her honor. It is built on the belief that healing happens through connection, compassion, and second chances. By bringing people and rescued animals together in safe, supportive environments, we create spaces where trust can be rebuilt, resilience can grow, and healing can take root.
